The ads say anyone can do it. Sounds simple. Even legitimate sites like wordpress.com/do-anything tell you anyone can build a site.

There’s more to offering a service or product and satisfying a client than these ads say.

You can build a free or low cost website or blog if you consider your learning time free. wordpress.com is legitimate.

My questions are, why do so many people charge to build them? And, why do so many people and businesses pay for a site developer?

A website, always has problems.
You’ll need to call support lots of times for the first year or so.
Most people in business don’t know how to build a web site.
As a beginner you have to hire a developer to build a site or build you own. I found a couple of sites that will help you make the decision.

How do you build a website for an ongoing business? Notice I said ongoing. You already know who your clients are and what they need.

If you don’t know what your blog or website will focus on, here are some ideas to help you figure it out.

Billions of people use the Internet. If you try to do something new, you’ll never start.

Where do you fit? Help others sell things, get information or write.

Do you already know how to build a website? Yes or no, building a website takes learning time and problem solving.

What do you want your visitors to do? What do you want them to take home?

How would a visitor get to the information your site offers? Make a path to the information. The simpler the better.

Now, what do you want? If you want to learn to write well — blog. Do you also want to build the site yourself? Or, have someone build it?

There’s a lot of people out there making a lot of money from blogging. The reason why these people (including myself) are making money from their blogs is because they have never given up, and they have chosen their niche wisely. Blog about what you know, and what you are passionate about to start with. At the same time, have an idea in mind to monetize the blog (advertisements, affiliate offers, products, ebooks etc). Spencer’s article and the Moore video form a short course on buying or building a website or a blog.

Read the article and watch the video from here. That will give you good idea what you are trying to achieve.

Watch Tyler Moore’s video. It takes an hour and 12 minutes to see the step by step process. He answers a lot of your questions. The first time thru just get the idea of what a project it is.

After reading the Spencer article and watching the Moore video you know a lot of the jargon and many of the issues. If you hire a developer, you’ll know what developer is taking about.

If you think you might be able to build a site watch the video again. This time slowly. Stop and go over the sections you can’t follow.

You’ll catch a lot more this time.

If you build the site, you’ll have a functioning website or blog that can do most of the things you want. And you’ll understand how to change it.

Do everything Moore recommends including sign up with HostGator. Every hosting company has different ways of doing the same thing. It will be simpler to use his instructions and HostGator to learn. Using his saving code it will cost around $10 for a month.

The main thing is to finish a draft. See how well it works. Write some posts. Have friends criticize it. Publicize it on Facebook and Twitter. The month will pass quickly.

As I said a lot more needs to be done to make it a successful business with a blog.
